Being a young person is tough--and being a young adult with a disability makes it even tougher.
It seems that people are more willing to judge a person on face value. To focus on the physical imperfections and what a person can’t do, then to take a moment on what that person has accomplished, and if given the proper tools and inspiration, what they might become.
When I was a child, I had seizures. As a result, it impacted my fine and gross motor skills, and my speech. My parents, teachers, and therapists worked hard with me, and it paid off. As a result of their efforts, I became an award-winning photographer in high school, something I never dreamed of being. But even with all my success I was considered different because of my disability, and other kids made fun of me.
Because of my disability, I have learned to look deeper than the surface, to see the beauty and what-if possibilites that lie beneath the surface. It is my goal, through my photograph to encourage people to also look deeper, beneath the surface appearances.
